Zeds Dead- Victor EP 2012

on Friday, July 6, 2012

I had the pleasure of seeing Zeds Dead for my first time at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, Radius 2011. The museum offered a different feel for the event; spacemen and exotic pilot suits were everywhere, so were giant airplane propellers and space capsules. However the venue offered limited space cutting off Zeds Dead’s set by after 30 minutes. Shit was beat. Thankfully I got to see them at Coachella and it more than made up for it. Yee! They fuckin’ killed it!

Zeds Dead are a Canadian Electro/Dubstep music duo from Toronto, Ontario composed of DC and Hooks. DC and Hooks have been producing music together since 2004 but under the name Mass Productions. In 2010 they hosted a weekly party at venue “751” in Toronto called Bassmentality. There they played alongside The Killabits, killing every show every week until they started getting their names out. In November 2010 San City High released the duo’s first official single, “Rudeboy”.

One of the things that I like most about Zeds Dead is that they release free music such as “Journey of a Lifetime” in 2009. I believe this shows true artistry because it shows that they make music for music’s sake rather than for money. Since then they’ve released 20 tracks for free. You could say that they are part of a new generation of artists who continuously release free music to the general public.

Zeds Dead released “Rumble in the Jumgle” in 2010 which went on to reach #1 on Beatport’s breakbeat chart. In 2011 they teamed up with their old friends The Killabits to produce “Bassmentality”, a tribute to their Toronto roots. In 2012 about a week ago, they released Victor, a 6 track EP featuring Omar LinX on all of them. It’s the perfect combination between hip-hop and electro with a drop of dubstep. It might be my favorite EP from them thus far.

The name “Zeds Dead” comes from the duo’s actual names, Zack and Dylan (Z &D), but it is also a reference to a line from the 1994 Quentin Tarantino Film Pulp Fiction. (Click HERE to see)
